From Consultancy Overflow to AI-First Agency
First Phase (2015-2021): Building the Foundation
In the early years, SLX was essentially the “implementation team” for SiteLynx’s consulting clients. We focused on:
- Marketing automation platforms (HubSpot, Marketo, Pardot)
- First-party data strategies (post-Cambridge Analytica reality)
- Multi-channel demand generation
- Analytics and attribution
What we learned: Most agencies overcomplicate things to justify their fees. We learned to simplify ruthlessly and measure everything against revenue contribution.
Turning Point (2020-2022): The AI Awakening
When GPT-3 launched in 2021, Graham saw what was coming. The entire “Search Economy” that had defined digital marketing for 25 years was about to transform into an “Answer Economy.”
The question became: How do you optimize for AI assistants, not just Google?
We started experimenting with:
- AI-assisted content creation (with human oversight)
- Schema optimization for answer engines
- Monitoring brand presence in ChatGPT and Perplexity
- Automated workflows using n8n and LLM APIs
The insight: AI wouldn’t replace marketers. It would replace marketers who refused to use AI.
