How SLX.marketing Was Born

In 2015, after nearly 20 years of running SiteLynx as a strategic SEM, founder Graham Hansell noticed a pattern:

The same problem kept happening:

Clients would go through expensive acquisitional campaigns. They’d get brilliant results. They’d nod enthusiastically. Then… nothing would happen to that traffic, leads went cold, sales lost.

Not because the strategy was wrong, but because:

  • Internal teams were already stretched thin
  • Other agencies focused on “drive more traffic” instead of conversion
  • No one wanted to do the unglamorous work of actually delivering leads
The gap between Insight and Action was costing companies millions.

So we created SLX.marketing to be the team that actually closes that gap.

SLX started as the operational complement to SiteLynx’s strategic work. While SiteLynx advised at the board level on digital discovery and governance, SLX handled:

  • Demand generation – Actually filling the pipeline with qualified prospects
  • Remarketing campaigns – Keeping brands in the consideration set
  • Marketing automation – Setting up workflows that worked 24/7

From Consultancy Overflow to AI-First Agency

First Phase (2015-2021): Building the Foundation

In the early years, SLX was essentially the “implementation team” for SiteLynx’s consulting clients. We focused on:

  • Marketing automation platforms (HubSpot, Marketo, Pardot)
  • First-party data strategies (post-Cambridge Analytica reality)
  • Multi-channel demand generation
  • Analytics and attribution

What we learned: Most agencies overcomplicate things to justify their fees. We learned to simplify ruthlessly and measure everything against revenue contribution.

Turning Point (2020-2022): The AI Awakening

When GPT-3 launched in 2021, Graham saw what was coming. The entire “Search Economy” that had defined digital marketing for 25 years was about to transform into an “Answer Economy.”

The question became: How do you optimize for AI assistants, not just Google?

We started experimenting with:

  • AI-assisted content creation (with human oversight)
  • Schema optimization for answer engines
  • Monitoring brand presence in ChatGPT and Perplexity
  • Automated workflows using n8n and LLM APIs

The insight: AI wouldn’t replace marketers. It would replace marketers who refused to use AI.
